Because she will reinstate the Child Tax Credit

As someone deeply committed to lifting families out of poverty, I am encouraged by Vice President Harris’s steadfast support for reinstating the expanded Child Tax Credit (CTC). During her time in the Senate, Harris demonstrated her dedication to this shared goal through her signature LIFT (Livable Incomes for Families Today) the Middle Class Act. While the LIFT Act differed from the expanded CTC, it shared the core mission of providing substantial financial support to low- and middle-income families.

And one of the Biden-Harris administration’s first legislative victories in passing the American Rescue Plan Act included the temporary expansion of the CTC in 2021, which was transformative for millions of American families and our country’s most powerful tool on record for slashing poverty—particularly for children. Harris’s commitment to not only reinstating but potentially expanding this program to include a more generous benefit for newborns shows she understands the reality too many Americans currently face: the economy does not work for the everyday person, and it has never worked as it should for Black and Brown people.

What sets Harris apart is her holistic view of family economic security. In addition to the expanded CTC, she has proposed other measures, like providing housing assistance for lower-income families through refundable tax credits. This approach demonstrates an understanding that financial stability requires addressing various interconnected challenges. Such an inclusive view of what families need to thrive aligns with my own work; not just emphasizing the importance of a single policy, but addressing the myriad systems that are not so frankly designed with our most vulnerable populations in mind.

As the daughter of immigrants who pursued the American dream, Harris brings a unique perspective to these issues. Her personal story of overcoming barriers resonates with many of us, particularly those striving for economic stability and upward mobility. Along with her track record of tireless advocacy, her leadership will ensure we are finally able to evolve past the status quo that benefits the few while exacting a dire toll on the many.

Kamala Harris’s commitment to reinstating the expanded Child Tax Credit, coupled with her broader vision for economic equity, makes her the ideal candidate for anyone who believes that our society and communities will flourish through shared prosperity.
