Because she will uphold the peaceful transfer of power

Kamala Harris believes in free speech. She understands that while she may be pro-choice, she must respect the viewpoint of those who are not. And while she maintains that guns should be better regulated, she must accept that others may disagree.

But certain truths are undeniable. The current vice president recognizes that what happened on January 6, 2021, was unacceptable, abhorrent, and must be condemned, no matter what party one votes for. The Capitol was stormed by rioters who threatened to hang then Vice President Mike Pence. They broke down doors and windows and vandalized the building, fueled by Donald Trump’s false claims about the election.

No one can view the footage from that terrible day and say otherwise. No one can watch members of the Capitol Police brutally beaten, screaming in pain, and pretend it was peaceful. Donald Trump has promised to pardon the 1,500 rioters who have so far been prosecuted. As I write this, he’s due to host a fundraiser at one of his golf clubs in a few days to help pay for the rioters’ legal fees.

Unlike certain Republican politicians who developed selective amnesia after running for their lives, a truly patriotic American would never cast a vote for Donald Trump after watching the sickening footage of January 6, where he egged on the mob (“We’re going to walk down to the Capitol… Because you’ll never take back our country with weakness”) before retreating to the White House to watch the carnage unfold.

Those are the words of a dictator. Those are the words of someone who will seize power by force. Our country is at great risk because of Donald Trump’s vicious words and reckless inaction that day, and I choose Kamala because I know she believes in and will uphold the peaceful transfer of power. She will ensure the perpetrators of that terrible day are held accountable. Under Kamala Harris, democracy and decency will prevail.
